| If you deal with bloating, gas, heartburn, or stomach pain on a regular basis, you already know how much it affects your daily life. What you might not know is that the standard fix — reaching for an antacid — could be working against you. | Here's what's actually going on, and what you can do about it. | The Real Reason Your Stomach Is Struggling | Your body produces digestive enzymes to break food down into smaller pieces your bloodstream can absorb. Most of this work happens in the small intestine, driven by enzymes from the pancreas. | When those enzymes are low, food doesn't get broken down properly. Nutrients don't get absorbed. And you end up with the symptoms you're probably all too familiar with — bloating, gas, cramping, constipation, or diarrhea. | What depletes your enzymes? A few common culprits: getting older, eating too much sugar, and regularly eating processed food. Raw, whole foods actually contain their own enzymes, which takes pressure off your pancreas. Processed food does the opposite — it forces your pancreas to work overtime, and over time, that wears it down. | The Heartburn Trap | About 40% of Americans deal with some form of acid reflux. The typical response is to grab an antacid or get a prescription for something stronger — Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid. These medications suppress stomach acid, and that seems to make sense on the surface. Less acid, less burning. | But here's the problem: your stomach needs acid. | Stomach acid (called hydrochloric acid) does three critical jobs. First, it breaks down protein so your body can use it. Second, it activates an enzyme called pepsin, which is essential for digestion. Third, it acts as your first line of defense — killing off bacteria, parasites, and yeast before they can cause bigger problems. | When you block acid long-term, you don't just stop the heartburn. You block your ability to absorb key nutrients like zinc, B12, folic acid, calcium, and iron. You open the door to bacterial overgrowth. You can end up with fatigue, brain fog, mood issues, and worsening food allergies — all because you stopped the acid that was keeping things in check. | Low Stomach Acid Looks a Lot Like Too Much | Here's what surprises most people: low stomach acid causes many of the same symptoms as high stomach acid. Bloating, gas, heartburn, indigestion — you can get all of these from having too little acid, not too much. | Research estimates that 50% of Americans over 60 have low stomach acid. If you haven't had a definitive test — like an upper GI endoscopy — confirming that you have excess acid or H. pylori infection, there's a real chance antacids are solving the wrong problem. | What to Try Instead | Start with a high-quality pancreatic digestive enzyme taken with each meal. Many people find their bloating, gas, and reflux symptoms improve significantly within a week or two. If you've been on prescription acid-blocking medications for more than three months, don't stop them cold — take the enzymes alongside them and see how your body responds. Many people find they no longer need the medication over time. | If enzymes alone don't fully resolve things, consider adding a probiotic (good bacteria) taken on an empty stomach. One to two months of probiotic support is usually enough to reset your gut. You can also add Betaine HCL with pepsin, which helps restore healthy stomach acid levels — but only if you're not actively on prescription reflux medications. | Diet Matters Too | Certain foods relax the valve between your esophagus and stomach, making reflux worse. The main ones to cut back on: fried and fatty foods, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol, chocolate, citrus, tomatoes, garlic, and peppermint. | A few simple habits also help: don't lie down within three hours of eating, eat smaller meals more often, and try sleeping on your side. | If you've tried all of this and you're still struggling, ask your doctor to test you for GERD and H. pylori. But for most people, the answer is simpler than a prescription — your gut just needs better support. | | Let's Connect | | Free Resources: Visit yourfibrodocor.com — go to Patient Center → Health Condition Articles for the Brain Function Questionnaire, sleep protocols, testimonials, and more. | Brought to you by or sponsored by Essential Therapeutics and essentialtherastore.com, physician formulated, pharmaceutical grade, clinically proven supplements for optimal cellular health. | | | Note: This newsletter is for education.
