Without it, your body simply cannot repair itself. When you miss out on "delta wave" sleep, your inflammatory chemicals increase by 40%, and your risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes skyrockets. | | Why Your Sleep Matters More Than You Think | | During deep sleep, your brain’s glymphatic system turns on, acting like a dishwasher to flush out toxins. If you aren't sleeping, those toxins build up, leading to "brain fog" and oxidative stress. Furthermore, poor sleep lowers your pain threshold—making everything hurt more. | My Sleep Protocol | Most people sabotage their sleep hormone, melatonin, without realizing it. Here is how we start the repair process: | Consistent Wake Times: Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This sets your circadian rhythm. Morning Sunlight: Get 20–30 minutes of sun (or a SAD light) first thing in the morning to trigger your "wake" cycle. The Blue Light Ban: Get off the iPad and phone before bed. Blue light tells your brain it's daytime, which tanks your melatonin. Check Your Labs: Make sure your Vitamin D3 is above 50, and check your Ferritin (iron) levels. Low iron is a leading cause of Restless Leg Syndrome.
| | Natural Solutions Over Prescriptions | | I always caution my patients against prescription sleep meds—some studies show they can increase the risk of death by up to 500% and often just "knock you out" without providing actual restorative sleep. Instead, try these natural alternatives: | For Fibromyalgia: Start with 5-HTP. It raises serotonin and boosts your natural melatonin by 200%. Take 100mg–300mg on an empty stomach with a splash of juice to help it cross the blood-brain barrier. For General Insomnia: Use sublingual melatonin (3mg–12mg). Dissolving it under the tongue bypasses the liver and works much faster than capsules.
| For the "Night Owl": If you can’t wind down, use a blend of GABA, L-theanine, and Valerian Root. These calm the nervous system without making you feel "drugged" the next morning.
| | What if I Wake Up at 3:00 AM? | | If you wake up and can't get back to sleep, it might be a blood sugar crash. Your body releases adrenaline and cortisol to compensate for low sugar, which snaps you wide awake. Try a small snack before bed, like an apple with almond butter, to keep your glucose steady. | Deep restorative sleep is the key to unlocking your health.
