Have a Chronic Illness? Here are the labs I recommend.
Finding and fixing underlying causes
Having a chronic illness can be incredibly frustrating. Dealing with family, friends and doctors that don’t understand your condition can take its toll. You may begin to believe you can never feel good again. I understand.
However, after specializing in complex, chronic illnesses for the last two and half decades I know that most “medical misfits” (been everywhere tried everything and still sick) simply fall through the cracks. Conventional medicine typically focuses on suppressing symptoms. You get a diagnosis, then a series of drugs to manage the symptoms. This approach works for most people. The patient is happy, their symptoms are reduced or eliminated, and the doctor is happy he or she was able to help.
But what about the minority of patients that don’t get better or who want to do more than suppress their symptoms? For these individuals finding the underlying cause(s) of their illness is the key for feeling good again.
Not to be controversial but the reality is most over the counter and almost all prescription drugs, merely mask symptoms. Drugs almost rarely deal with the underlying causes or reasons why these problems exist.
This is like trying to mop the wet kitchen floor, repeatedly every time it rains, while ignoring the leaky roof! Fix the cause (hole in the roof) and the symptoms (wet kitchen floor) disappear, for good.
Drugs can be helpful, even lifesaving, but too many, too long, can create additional health problems.
Thank goodness we have that option when needed. However, it’s better to fix the leaky roof than continue mopping the wet floor every time it rains. Correcting underlying causes is always preferable when possible.
The first place to start for overcoming a chronic illness is to find the “leaky roof.” Step two is fixing it (them).
Testing instead of guessing is crucial. Without testing you’re often guessing which path to take. And more times than not it’s the wrong path. This leads to more frustration.
I find that most of my patients have had typical lab work (CBC, lipid panel, metabolic panel, etc.) that may be helpful as a screening tool, but fails to provide the needed answers for complex cases.
Uncovering the underlying cause(s) often requires thinking outside the box and persistent detective work. The video below outlines some of the labs to consider based on the symptoms associated with your condition.
Don’t give up. You can feel better.
