If you're one of the 26 million Americans taking a statin drug like Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, or Vytorin, this could be the most important thing you read today. |

The Statin Story: What They're Not Telling You |
Statin drugs are the best-selling medications in history — bringing in $26 billion a year for drug companies. Pfizer alone spends over $3 billion annually on advertising to convince us we need these drugs. With nearly 38,000 sales reps visiting doctors every single day, armed with free samples and cherry-picked data, it's no wonder statins have become so widespread. |
But here's the thing most people never hear: the actual benefits are surprisingly small. |
What the research actually shows:
A major review of 44 trials involving nearly 10,000 patients found the death rate was identical — 1% — whether patients took Lipitor, another statin, or nothing at all.
In one well-known study (the CARE trial), patients with heart disease had a 94.3% chance of surviving five years without a statin. With a statin? That went up to 95.4%. That's a difference of just 1.1%.
For people with no signs of heart disease, statins reduced overall death risk by a mere 0.3%. |
|
Meanwhile, a British study found that long-term statin use in otherwise healthy people actually increased the risk of death by 1% over 10 years compared to a sugar pill. |
|
The Side Effects Nobody Warned You About |
The most common complaint? Muscle pain and weakness. One study found that 98% of patients on Lipitor experienced muscle problems. But that's not all. |
Nerve damage: A large Danish study of 500,000 patients found that one year on statins raised the risk of nerve damage by 15%. After two or more years, that risk jumped to 26%. |
Memory loss: Former astronaut Dr. Duane Graveline documented his complete memory loss from Lipitor in his book, Lipitor: Thief of Memory. |
|
Heart failure: Here's the irony — since statins were introduced in 1987, congestive heart failure has more than doubled. Heart attacks went down slightly, but heart failure went through the roof. |
Cancer risk: Every rodent study to date has shown statins cause cancer. In the CARE trial, breast cancer rates among statin users jumped by 1,500%. |
Diabetes: A six-year study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that statin users had an 85% higher risk of developing diabetes, twice the risk of diabetic complications, and a greater risk of obesity compared to non-users. |

Why Statins Make You Feel So Tired |
Here's what most doctors don't explain: statins work by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA Reductase. That's how they lower cholesterol. But that same enzyme is also needed to make something your body desperately needs — a nutrient called CoQ10. |
Think of CoQ10 as the spark plug for every cell in your body. It powers the tiny energy factories inside your cells (called mitochondria) that produce 95% of your body's energy. Without enough CoQ10, your cells simply can't make the energy they need. |
|
⚠️ This is critical: Researchers estimate that just a 25% drop in your CoQ10 levels can trigger serious health problems — including high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, immune problems, and crushing fatigue. |
Your heart is a muscle, and it needs more CoQ10 than almost any other organ. When statins deplete your CoQ10, your heart muscle pays the price. This is likely the reason congestive heart failure has skyrocketed since statins became popular. |

The Good News: CoQ10 Can Help |
CoQ10 (also called ubiquinone) has been studied extensively, and the results are impressive: |
Dr. Karl Folkers, who won the prestigious Priestly Medal from the American Chemical Society for his CoQ10 research, found that patients treated with CoQ10 alongside standard medications had a 75% survival rate over 3 years, compared to just 25% for those on medications alone. He stated, "I believe it is quite possible that cardiovascular disease may be significantly caused by a deficiency of CoQ10." |
|
In a study of terminally ill heart failure patients — people who normally survive only days — 71% of those taking CoQ10 survived one year, and 62% survived two years. |
CoQ10 has also been shown to lower blood pressure. In one study, it brought systolic pressure down from 141 to 126 and diastolic from 97 to 90. |
CoQ10 Around the World |
In Japan, over 12 million people — about 10% of the population — take CoQ10 regularly to prevent and treat heart disease. Japanese doctors have used it for decades, and 75% of all supplemental CoQ10 worldwide comes from Japan. |
How Much Should You Take? |
I recommend my patients take a minimum of 100–200 mg of CoQ10 daily for prevention and treatment of heart disease, including high blood pressure. |
If you're taking a statin, I strongly recommend adding at least 200 mg of CoQ10 to your daily routine. |
